View Full Version : A Great Map Site
A friend sent me this website, so I thought I would share it with you all. ?
It's unique in that you only have to download the County that you are currently researching in.

I really think this site is worth saving to a hints and tips folder as it gives a good out line of the counties in the 1800, one problem I had with it was when i came to print out the map showing hanley Castle what was shown on the screen and what was printed off the map was different.
so to get what i wanted I had to do a screen Grab, and that worked,
thanks Kaye

Hi Kaye,
What a great site  the maps are lovely - and detailed too.
I haven't tried to print one off yet - what is a screen grab please Len?

Hi Gang
going to have a play with this site too asap
Just received in the post today my first 3 copies of certs and can't wait to do a BMD trawl on my ggg grandmother as I now know her maiden name was potentially Mary Moor before she married Henry Burford and they had Henry Jnr. whose cert I have just obtained [1852]
The address is somewhat puzzling on the cert. it reads Bridge End, Hagley - I was told today that there are two Hagleys so I will try the Worcestershire one first as all the Census name this particular one
so its off to the BMD site before I start packing the car for the holiday

Just to share with you my good luck today
whilst in Manchester I called in Central Library and made a general enquiry at their Local Studies Desk
the staff were incredibly supportive offering to find the relevant old maps then photocopy them and, to my amazement 4 out of the 6 streets I was looking for 1850-1899 are still there today
so taking a leaf out of Len's book and previous emails he's mentioned I'm off with my digital camera next week to take pics. of the streets hoping the existing houses still stand!:)
.. and, today Sunday I have just done a Google Earth on those old addresses to see what they look like now - some still existing but as maisonettes others terraced housing schemes - good to compare the old with the new housing

Hi Chris,:)
Thats really good news...four out of six streets after all this time are great odds.
Your going to enjoy yourself taking photographs there,:) hope we get to see them, it's an amazing feeling to walk in our ancestors' footsteps.
Google Earth is simply amazing isn't it ? mind boggling
Have fun taking photos,
Kaye.:)
