Hi Guys,
Well here we are the old boards on a new address. Hopefully, all the info is still there and all your old user names and passwords will work as they did before.
Sorry its taken a while to do this but it meant some a change of hosting company, major sorting out, upgrading and generally belting it with a hammer ... no only joking about the last bit ... but it was tempting many times. Hopefully, it will all have been worth it.
There will be new features added over the next few weeks, but there is a major new feature that has been added for the launch of the new/old site ... Living Avatars. Basically, you gain points for every post you make and then you can use those points to "buy" new clothes, hair styles, and bits and bobs to dress and jazz up your avatar. The more you post the better your avatar looks. Fun eh :D At the moment only the basic pack of add-ons has been installed ... I'll add more in the next few days.
So, I'll leave you all to have a look around and check it is all there and generally give it a good test drive. Any problems leave me a note below and I'll look into it and try and get it sorted out.

Sally ... off to play with my avatar now :o

Hi Maggie
I am so relieved to see that you could log in OK and so presumably that part is working OK. I feel like a worried new mother here :o
It is good to be back and a least you all know now that I have done my best to safeguard all the info and didn't just trash it when the boards didn't work ;)
Let's hope that over time all the old members come back.
The big question is now ... what do we all want done with the board a Yuku ... I am not sure that it can be just deleted so any ideas of what we could change it to would be welcome. I wondered whether a board just for surnames would appeal, or perhaps a board for London Ancestors or one for Ancestors from all the big cities ie. London, Birmingham, etc.
Anyway, I'll leave the question out for a while to see what ideas everyone has.

Hi Sally,
It is so nice to be back on our old Parishmouse again.
Thank you for all your hard work, swearing and hammer jobs Sally :smash:
:grouphug:
Kaye.
Just read your last post Sally, I think your idea of using the Yuku boards for surnames is a brilliant - 'Big cities' - 'cos not everyone would have ancestors from London.

Hi Kaye and welcome back
I am just thinking out loud here ... but maybe the surnames would be better than the big cities. If we had a board just for surnames it would sort of replace the surname lists we originally had on the main site but would it duplicate the surname lists here on parishchatter too much? Although I could put a link in that board to the boards just for the surnames.
The big cities could work but again is it going to duplicate what we have here especially in view of the fact that we could have a social group for the big cities here on this board.
It is difficult to know what to do that won't make it too confusing for others.
Having said that or course if we all decided that it would be useful to have new boards for both surnames and big cities then that is not a problem as the Yuku boards are free adn now both the main sites are on fully managed hosting plans I won't be spending quite so much time banging my head against the brick wall of server setups and updating and patching the software that runs them.

Hi Sally,
Using the 'old' forum for city surnames sounds like a good idea to me too :)
I don't really have any ancestors from cities - mine tend to be countryfolk (I was going to say country bumkins but I won't ) others do have them though I'm sure.
I love this :fencing:couldn't think where it would fit into what I wanted to say, but thought I would use it anyway

Hi Sally,
I think our last posts crossed in the ether
What about using the Yuku board for folks to 'advertise' the resources that they own and are willing to use for look-ups? It would have to be done in such a way as to not contravene copyright eg. I could say that I could look up baptisms in Gloucestershire between 1810-1837.
Also, folks could offer look-ups in their local RO if they felt so inclined .... mine would be Northampton and Leicester (which I visit occasionally).
Just a thought really ....

Hi Maggie
Well that's another good idea. We'll see what other ideas people come up with and then try and make a group decision.
I've put a message out on the Yahoo Groups to tell everyone that these boards are up and running again so lets hope old members stop by and say hello.
I must get on now with all the jobs that should have been done over the past few days and weren't because of sorting out the boards. Will have a think about things while I am dong the jobs.
How are you getting on with the new parishmouse.com site? I need to finish putting back a few remaining transcriptions and a load of photos.

Hi Guys,
It is amazing what can come to mind when cleaning the floor ... what about, and this is just an idea, shoot it down if you want, using the yuku board as a Cemeteries and Gravestones board. We could have sections for photographed graves, queries about cemeteries, requests for look-ups etc. etc. If everyone submitted just one grave photo over time it could be quite useful.
Just a thought and so am putting it out for consideration along with the other ideas. We don't have to choose just one as other boards could be setup as they are free ... not too many though because of keeping an eye on them all.

Hi Guys,
Some good ideas so far (whilst I was sleeping over here) - perhaps my thoughts could be put into the 'think tank' to be improved on or discarded......
 A board for ancestors from the 'big cities' along with their 'trades' and maybe a little history of the areas.
combined with -
A board for 'country folk' ancestors, along with their 'trades' and maybe a little history of the areas.
 A board for look ups from members resources.
Combined with
Any details of 'one name studies' that members may have or be working on, offering look ups.
 A board for cemeteries and gravestones - Sally's good idea.
And lastly, because 'Military' is a sort of sub board on here -
 A board for Military ancestors, combining wars they fought in, medals, photographs & whatever.
Sally, does Yuku have an email notification of posts like PM has ? as you said not too many because of keeping an eye on them - I myself don't have as much time as I used to have now that I am caring (palliative) for Catherine.
Kaye.

Hi Kaye
I think we are beginning to form some good ideas here.
I had the idea over dinner of a board for Ag Labs so that would go with your idea of Country Folk.
The one name studies could sit with a Surnames board
So that leaves us with Big Cities, Cemeteries and Graves and lastly (but by no means least) your brilliant idea of a military board.
That by my fairly dodgy maths, 5 boards in addition to this one  :faint:
OK let me think on it and see what others think and also how it could be arranged between various servers and yuku. There is still up and running the original server that pm and the boards were originally on so it may be that rather than close the account there it may be worth putting something on it.
Let me have a think ... :juggle::jaw::banplease:

Hi Maggie
I've been thinking about your idea of a look-up exchange. I thought there already was one for Worcestershire but have noticed on the Genuki pages that it no longer exists. So maybe that idea is also a candidate for a board. If we had it running on a board it is the one easy way to keep peoples private info eg. email addresses as private as possible. I have tried to think of a better way but always come up against the problem of spam bots and harvesting our info.
So perhaps we should up the count of "Wanted Boards" to 6 :p
Any other requests while I am figuring all this out???

Hi Sally,
I like the idea of doing look-ups for others - if we could get more people interested I'm sure loads of them have resources that they wouldn't mind using to help with this.
One of the larger forums does this (I'm sure you know which one I mean ) but there is an awful lot of back-biting goes on too, so I'm sure folks would appreciate a straightforward forum they could use to ask for their look-ups.
I can't think of any others at the moment - but given time .... :cool2:

Hi Maggie,
Yup I know which one you mean ... not my favourite at the mo cause they have gone a registered the name ParishChat ... now how long have the message borads at PM being called ParishChat  Hence why the new address to the boards is Parishchatter
Now back to topic ... if we had one board for Look-ups that could cover all the counties. So there would be a section for each county and then sub-sections for Look-up offers and Look-up requests.
We have something similar already on these boards but it might be that they haven't been used much because they are buried in the boards too much. So perhaps a board only for look-ups would be a good idea.
I think we will stick with yuku for one two reasons (apart from me being tight ;) ) I have noticed that since the site that is there was put up and linked to parishmouse.co.uk there hasn't been one single spam entry which is amazing. So that is a good reason to stick with them I think. The other is that if we are going to have a number of boards then if people can access them from one registration and log in that seems to me a good idea.
What do you think ... tis your idea.

Hi Sally,
I think that is a very good idea - giving it more room to develop :)
Also, the Yuku is there anyway so use it - I'm all for making use of stuff when it's offered :rolleyes2: it's not a case of being tight but being practical .... ;)
I also noticed 'The Mousehole' and had a nosey in there - that could take off too methinks, I know you tried it before - but who knows, this time it just might work

Hi Maggie
I think for this one it would be best to open up a new board and call it the Parishmouse Look-up Exchange of something similar.
I think that the existing parishmouse board on yuku would be best used for the cemeteries and graves board as it is similar to what pm has been in the past. Having said that I could move parishmouse.co.uk to point to this board ... Ooo deciions, decisions ... I am not good at those

Hi Sally,
Ah I'm with you now - the penny has dropped :brick:or the brick has landed
I think that's a good name for the new board too - people should be able to find it by googling I should think too.
You are a clever woman you know ;)
