I am descended from a Frederick Crompton Edmonds, who in census returns claimed to have been born in Ombersley, Worcs, in or around 1847.
There is no record of his birth in the GRO registers or in the equivalent in Scotland. I have had a researcher look through the parish records for Ombersley with no match. I cannot find a reference to him in the 1851 or 1861 census: he surfaces as a Private soldier in 1865.
In his marriage certificate (1869) he claims to be the son of "George Edmonds, Solicitor". There are only three candidates: George Whitfield Edmonds, the radical agitator from Birmingham [probably too old and with no known link to Worcestershire], George Maxwell Edmonds, a respectable gent from Lincolnshire with no known link to Worcestershire, and George Edmonds, a rather loopy solicitor, linguist and author from Cornwall who practiced in London and was in a Scottish lunatic asylum in 1841 but was married to someone who would have been over 50 in 1847, and with no known link to Worcestershire.
I would be grateful for anyone who has come across any Edmonds, or Cromptons, and also anyone with access to other parish records near to Ombersley.
Thanks.
