Hullo everyone, my first posting and I am searching for any information about William Valentine Maybury, b.1799, Shifnal, Shropshire. Father William Maybury, Mother: Jane. I think he could have had a sister called Sabarina. He was tried and transported to Oz and we think he might have left a wife and child behind. William is my g,g,g Grandfather.

Any info at all would be most appreciated.

Suzanne;)

Hi Suzanne,:)

Welcome to PM, it's great to see another Aussie on the boards, especially one with a transportee in their tree. :D

Sorry I can't help with your Shropshire family, but if anyone can, Sally (the boss) can, she's a wizard (the nice kind)

Thank you for your reply, Kaye. From one aussie to another: Onya! This is a very friendly list. I love the 'smiles'.

Good luck with your research, too.

Hi Bill,

Thanks for your reply. I have been away for a couple of weeks and this has been my first chance to reply.

I have looked at the Maybury website and have sent a message. Is Maybury a common name in the Shropshire area? It isn't very common out here, even Mayberry is not found much. Our William V had an eventful and interesting life in NSW. Only wish I had a photograph!

Anyway will let you know what I find.

Cheers

Suzanne;)

Hi Suzanne,
William is also my g g g grandfather and I am trying to research further up the tree. I am wondering if you have found any more info about his family. I checked out the Bailey records and yes he was sent to Oz for 14 years.

Hi there:cool:

never heard the surname Maybury before - have you looked into it?

seems to suggest it originates from the place in Cheshire and there are many variations on the spelling

anyway, good hunting!

I think those sites proclaiming coat of arms etc are a little commercial. I don't know about the Cheshire connection. I haven't made it back that far yet. We are lucky we have a reasonably uncommon name. I only just found my first UK connection today..in Shifnal, Shropshire, near Birmingham..until 1827 when he "William Valentine Maybury" was transported to Australia for theft, as little as a shilling maybe but escaped the death penalty to have a life in Australia. Not bad destiny I would say!! Got to keep searching...see if I make it back to Cheshire!!:o

Hi Sue
Thanks for your reply. Only just got back from researching William V, in the country. Are you in England? We have lots of info here in Australia about William V but sketchy English info. Hope you can help. Which part of the family are you related to?
Regards

Suzanne
