I originally started researching this family in Southampton, Hampshire, but with further research, it seems that they originated in East Wittering, Sussex.

They eventually moved to Milton Abbot (Dawlish) Devon, where John Parr's occupation was a Coast Guard.

It was John's son (another John) who moved to Southampton.

Parr family......East Wittering, Sussex. Milton Abbot, Devon and Southampton, Hampshire.

Would love to hear from anyone with the same Surname interest.

Kaye.

Hi Kaye,
just a thought does the Coast guard organisation, or what ever have a list of past employer list at there head office?, I think this is worth chasing why not call in at any coast guard station and ask, As a ex boat owner I always found them helpful

Hi Len,

Thanks for your thoughts on Coast Guards......there's only one problem.......Sydney to Devon is a long way to go to ask ! LOL

However, I've been reading up on the C G Service, it's history is very interesting and in John's era, it was all about smugglers and stuff like that.

I've also come across a reference that The Coast Guards have records at the National Archives, Kew, so that will probably be my next step.

It would be great if there were records like the Armed Forces have.

Hi Kaye,

I wonder whether you have seen this entry in Genuki? It mentions a John Parr coastguard:

Hi Maggie,

Thanks so much, the Genuki site is great and yes, thats John and family, brilliant !

I use Genuki so much, yet it never occured to me that they would cover Coast Guards.

I found heaps of stuff on the NA site, but as usual you have to go to Kew to see it

The other two sites I haven't tried yet, but I will when I am on my second cup of coffee for the morning LOL

Thanks again,

Kaye.
